Most people think of New England or New York State when it comes to fall romantic getaways. But Virginia (VA) is perhaps the best location to go, because you can combine apple picking with fantastic hikes to see fall foliage as well as visits to the Virginia Wine Country and the estates of 3 former Presidents. With close proximity to many eastern cities from Portland (Maine) to Miami, the best fall romantic getaways are in VA.
On this three-day weekend itinerary, you’ll go from orchards to vineyards to luxury estates, while hiking to see panoramic views of the amazing reds, purples, yellows, and orange that fall brings. You just might fall in love with the experience. I guess that’s why they say “Virginia is for Lovers”.

Using Charlottesville, VA as a base, stay at the beautiful Keswick Hall & Golf Club on the outskirts of the city. This luxury estate has its own vineyard as well as a fine dining restaurant, Fossett’s, making it one of the best places for romantic getaways in VA.
Upon arrival, unwind at the resort and perhaps have a relaxing spa treatment.

After breakfast, pick apples at Carter Mountain Orchard, also known for their fresh apple cider donuts! Not only do they have orchards, but a Mountain Grill, a country store, and a hard cider cellar. After filling your belly with yummy goodness, hop over to the Gabriele Rausse Winery for their exceptional food-paired wine tastings.
Take a morning hike at Humpback Rock, popular with locals and visitors, and on the way back, either tour Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson; Highland, home of James Monroe; or Montepelier, home of James Madison. If you can visit all 3 homes, you will have had a mini-American history lesson! Can’t beat that!
