There are many things to do in the Algarve region of Portugal, as I mention in the The Coast That Launched 1,000 Ships post. Without a doubt, the best thing to do is explore the Algarve’s beaches. Here’s the rundown of the best beaches in the Algarve, which are quite possibly the best beaches in Portugal.
Praia do Camilo (Camilo Beach)
This famed beach is located at the bottom of a long staircase and tucked between spectacular rock formations. The view of the beach from the top is simply beautiful. Since it’s a sheltered bay, it’s a great place for swimming as well as for some iconic photos, but this little beach gets very crowded in the summer.
Praia do Porto (Porto do Mos beach)
This beautiful, sandy beach is backed by multi-colored cliffs and offers great views, of course. This beach is great for surfing and body-boarding.
Ponta da Piedade
Just beneath the lighthouse, the small beach at Ponta da Piedade offers incredible views all the way to Sagres, where people gather on the cliffs to watch the sunset. This beach is another spot to take some iconic photos, and it’s the best place to embark on a tour of the caves beneath these cliffs as well as kayaking and boat tours.
Meia Praia
This is the best, recreational beach in the region, offering a wide stretch of sand, calm waters for swimming, and several great restaurants right on the beach. The town of Lagos is an easy walk from this beach, so this is the beach you should visit when you really want the traditional beach experience as well as to have fun!
Praia da Dona Ana
Considered the most picturesque beach in the Algarve, this stunning small beach is backed by dramatic, colorful cliffs and blessed with golden sands and calm, clear waters. For amazing views and photos, look no further. I could sit on this beach for days!
