From brilliant lavender to vibrant sunflowers, there are so many options to choose from to see gorgeous flowers in bloom, and here are some of our favorite places to travel to see them.
Lavender Fields of Provence, France
Let’s admit it, we all want to see the stunning lavender fields in France! And why not? While there are plenty of lavender fields in Provence, the best and most popular one is the world-famous Valensole Plateau Lavender Fields. Imagine experiencing the scent of lavender surrounded by picturesque villages and deep blue lakes. The best part is that the lavender fields are framed by huge sunflowers, making this a truly magical place to visit.
Sunflowers of Tuscany, Italy
By the end of the spring season, if by chance, you have missed flowers, don’t worry. In Tuscany, sunflowers are planted in spring and start blooming as the season moves toward the end. A trip to Tuscany just to hunt these beautiful sunflowers is truly worth it, and there are many spots where you can find sunflowers as they are planted in different areas every year. One of the best spots to find sunflowers is the area of Casentino which features many sunflower fields that are clearly visible from the main road. Siena is another great place where visitors are greeted by surreal waves of sunflowers.
Tulips at Keukenhof, Netherlands
Every year from late March to mid-May, the Netherlands holds the annual Keukenhof Flower Exhibit, which has taken place since 1857. Located in the town of Lisse, Keukenhof Gardens is the largest bulb-flower garden in the world, where you can witness around 800 different varieties of tulips. The gardens come alive with a rainbow of colors from the millions of tulips that are in bloom as well as other flowers such as hyacinths, daffodils, and lilies. There are also plenty of benches and pathways to enjoy the scenery. Additionally, visitors can learn more about tulips and the history of the Netherlands at the onsite museum.
Istanbul Tulip Festival
Istanbul has one of the most unexpected flower fields in Europe. Since 2006, Istanbul’s city government has been scattering a kaleidoscope of color across the city each April, with a total of 30 million tulips planted in parks, avenues, traffic roundabouts and anywhere else with open ground. There’s even a magnificent ‘flower carpet’ of over half a million tulips in Sultanahmet’s Hippodrome, in front of the iconic Blue Mosque, so if you’re in Istanbul during springtime, you’ll be mezmerised by the beauty of the blooms everywhere you look.
Akureyri Botanical Gardens, Iceland
Travel to Northern Iceland and get ready to be stunned by the incredible array of flowers at Akureyri Botanical Gardens. From early spring to late autumn, visitors can explore the gardens and take in the beauty of the natural surroundings. In the summer months, the gardens are alive with bright colors from wildflowers, while in the winter, the gardens are covered in a blanket of snow. The botanical gardens also feature a range of educational programs and activities for visitors to enjoy.
